The Rock

Alcatraz. I've always wanted to visit, and earlier this year I got the chance. I've posted several other pictures from visit here, here, here. I wanted this image to have a very cinematic feel and also to give a cold feeling. Cuz believe me, it was flapjackin' cold out there!

Marin Sunset

Happy Wednesday to you all! This image falls under the "oldie but goodie" category. I posted it earlier this year after our trip to San Francisco. I've learned a few things since then so I thought I'd have another go at it. I've given this a new crop and slightly different treatment. These are the hills of the Marin Headlands, and they are pretty spectacular. To the left, out of frame, is the Golden Gate bridge.

mirrors are fun|nuf era srorrim

I took this at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. Great museum by the way if you're ever up that way. The roof is covered in grasses and plants! Anyway, I was checking out this mirror and my kids did the whole Scooby Doo stack up cute thing and presto! Always carry a camera with you.

Mossy steps

An old, mossy set of stairs in Alcatraz. So many great textures and patinas there.

Our lady of the beautiful window

I took this during our most recent trip to San Francisco. This church was about two blocks down from our hotel, and the stained glass window kept catching my eye. Have a great Sunday.

Alcatraz portrait

While we were touring Alcatraz, my little girl kept saying she wanted to take a picture of me. When I found a bit of light, I gave her the camera. I love her.

Take that first step

First step

San Francisco Time Lapse

Many thanks to Philip Bloom for his many tips and tutorials, both on his website and twitter, about creating time lapses. I actually got to meet him at Skywalker Ranch during our trip and had a nice little chat about movies and gear. A real gentleman.

And now, on with the show.

This was all shot from my hotel room over the course of three days. For bodies I used a Canon 7D and 50D. For lenses I used the Canon 24-105L, 70-200L and Tokina 12-24. The shooting time ranged from 30 minutes to a bit more than 2 hours. I used the Canon TC80N3 to keep the interval love going.

Post wise, I combined all the frames in Quicktime 7 then exported them as a full size movie file. Editing was done in Final Cut Pro with the final movie compressed in VisualHub. Whew, that's a lot of tech talk.

Thanks for watching and have a great week!

Bird man of Alcatraz

Sorry about the lack of posting yesterday, but I'm a bit under the weather. Never fear though, I'm back today! I had this shot all framed up and a seagull flew in and made it way better than it would've been! Enjoy!

Golden Gate

Just got back from our fabulous trip to San Francisco. The hotel was great, kids did awesome, and I took a lot of pictures. I think this is a trip that we'll all remember for a long time to come. Lots of stories and images to share, but I thought I'd start with a classic. This is a view that's been photographed thousands of times, but I wanted to have my very own. It was the perfect time to be up there, with the sun setting and a clear view over the bay. So nice.
